Not only organic…for us each vineyard is!
Since 2007 we manage vineyards and olive trees organically; we reached this after a long and elaborate cultivating experience respecting nature but mainly the quality purpose we set.
Over these years an accurate land analysis has been conducted performing a true business “zoning”: soil and climate characteristics of each piece of land to plant the vine kind that better fit our “micro-terrain”: part of antique Vernaccia clones on lime clay facing N/E to guarantee freshness and aroma, Sangiovese and Prugnolo Gentile, on clay-and-pebbles-rich lands facing south to enhance structure and grace.
It’s been years that we quit employing synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, substituting the first with spontaneous or sown green manures and the second with natural, permissible products. In such manner, we obtained correct vineyard equilibrium with a production calibrated to each plant capacity and balanced in vegetation.
VINE LANDS ARE DIVIDED IN TWO SEPARATE AREAS
PALAGIONE
Vineyards located in such area are in the southern part of the town of San Gimignano at a variable altitude between 250 and 350 meters above sea level mainly facing NE – E, SE, SW. The predominant species are Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Sangiovese and Prugnolo Gentile.
Geologically it is a typical littoral-originated zone, where stratified sands of the Pliocene Superior rich of big fossils, with characteristic pebbles, gravel and clays. A part of vineyards is set on more ancient areas showing Triassic cavernous limestone.
Composition: Sands 30-40%, Loam 20-30% – Clays 40–50%
MONTAGNANA
Along the Francigena route through these vineyards, located near the San Gimignano walls, the view shows breathtaking panoramas in each direction.
Altitude varies from 150 to 250 meters above sea level facing mainly SW.
The predominant species are Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Sangiovese and Merlot.
A very high presence of fossils, together with Pliocene sands with ocraceous clays and pebbles takes us back to a marine past of approx. 4-5 million years ago.
Composition: Sands 30-40%, Loam 35-45% – Clays 20–30%
